Good news for the end of the world, everyone, says Alasdair Stuart!
Despite The Bone Temple not performing to the ridiculous financial standard everything’s expected to perform to, we’re apparently getting the third part of the 28 Years Later trilogy anyway!
In a recent interview with JoBlo, director Danny Boyle said: “We ran out of time. Because it’s set in an area of Britain [where] you can only film at certain times of the year. We ran out of time this year – we literally ran out of time… So it’ll be, hopefully, fingers crossed, next year. But there’s the enthusiasm there, and Alex (Garland) has done a wonderful script for it.”
Both 28 Years Later and Bone Temple were phenomenally good, with the second one in particular crammed full of big ideas, brutality and haunting imagery. Chi Lewis-Parry did incredible work throughout that in particular and I’m delighted it looks like the world we left in Bone Temple is being returned to. These movies seem to be progressing the idea of post-apocalyptic fiction in some really interesting ways and I’m thrilled to see what they do next.
That comment about only being able to film at certain times of year is very intriguing too. If I had to guess, I’d suspect that the location they’re having trouble locking in scheduling for is Lindisfarne. The site of Spike’s home colony, it’s an island off the coast of Northumberland where the tide regularly floods cuts off access. Given the relatively small amount of 28 Years Later shot there I’m guessing that it was possible to schedule it relatively easily, and that a longer form story is more challenging.
I could be entirely wrong though. Either way, hurray for more INCREDIBLE UK post-apocalyptic fiction!
