The stowaways on the Protostar meet its emergency hologram and familiarise themselves with what the ship can offer.

The escaped prisoners explore the Liberator and  engage the computer Zen to help them escape the pursuing… oh, hang on, wrong programme. But if there is a definite Blake’s 7 vibe to the new, animated Star Trek Star show, it’s all for the best.

Prodigy is designed for the younger viewer, an entry level to the Star Trek universe, and this episode in particular helps as a primer to the Federation and Starfleet as ‘Holo nanny’ Janeway assumes the crew are Starfleet cadet ‘greenhorns’ under her tutelage. We discover the replicator, the engine room and a wonderful new conceit, the vehicle replicator – a giant 3D printer that constructs a shuttle craft in minutes.

But more than the tech, we get to know the crew. Dall assumes the role of captain before accepting that he needs to listen to others and elicit their support. Gwynn is in the brig, her father preparing his vessel the Red Pearl to track her down and his stolen ship. And Murf? Murf is just a joyful, gelatinous blob.

Verdict: An excellent introduction to the ideals of Star Trek, while also fleshing out the characters and being a load of fun. 8/10
