A mysterious arrival on a paradise island brings war back to the Amazons…

Patty Jenkins’ feature film introduction to Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman fulfils much of the promise of the character as seen in Batman vs. Superman, answering many of the questions posed in that earlier movie. It’s not a perfect film by any stretch of the imagination, but set against the earlier DC Universe missteps, it feels much stronger than it perhaps would have done had it arrived without that baggage. Our review of the movie (here) covers many of the pluses and minuses and it’s fair to say that the film stands up to being seen on the smaller screen, particularly in the Blu-ray which is very impressive visually.

As far as the extras go, we get the usual goofs (Chris Pine and a horse aren’t a good combination), as well as extended scenes (notably a different version of the boat scene between Diana and Steve Trevor) and deleted ones. There’s a special extra in the form of Etta’s Mission, which one suspects is setting up stuff for Justice League, but gives Lucy Davis a chance to show Etta in action.

The production featurettes are all interesting – Crafting the Wonder combines interview material from both sides of the camera, while Patty Jenkins gives some interesting insights in the pieces on the beach battle and the No Man’s Land sequence (which ties back to one of the deleted scenes). There are wider pieces on Finding the Wonder Woman Within (basically, how the character has been an inspiration), and The Trinity, which looks at how she differs from Batman and Superman. What there isn’t is a director’s commentary – and one can only hope that this will follow in due course.

Verdict: A decent package to accompany an excellent transfer of a very enjoyable movie. 8/10
