Cutaway Comics, out now

What happened after the Doctor and Sarah left Nunton…

An extra for the Omega releases, this is one of the most confident issues yet from Cutaway Comics. Baker takes to the storytelling requirements of the comic with ease, and there’s some really dynamic art from Stephen B. Scott and colourist Andrew Orton that really feels as if it’s a story being told in October 1976, straight after The Hand of Fear aired on TV.

Scott’s cover, with its homage to the Hulk (and use of a highly appropriate visual model for the scientist affected – he looked somewhat familiar when I was reading the comic, and I laughed when I learned who it was) sets the scene – we’re almost in 1950s B movie territory, with a Thing (not resembling the one from The Addams Family this time) terrorising the nuclear complex. Glyn Houston’s Professor Watson is recognisable, both physically and in his reactions, while new character Jekka Fenton doesn’t seem affiliated with any of the organisations we’re aware of from the TV show. The story rattles along, with the titular phrase reappearing for good reason, and ends rather surprising, definitely leaving the reader wanting more.

As ever, Cutaway provides a bonus disc – looking at the creation of the comic, chatting with creator Bob Baker, and providing a commentary to The Hand of Fear.

Verdict: A bonus we might easily not have had, this is a strong addition to the range. 9/10
