The TARDIS crashes back into Dorium Maldovar’s life…

Roy Gill’s tale for a solo Doctor, with Dorium acting as his temporary companion for the purposes of this story, is an intriguing one – with links to one of the other new series spin-offs that Big Finish have done. It doesn’t matter if you’ve not heard that story (as I hadn’t at the time of listening to this) – The Light Keepers stands on its own, although you’ll get more from it if you know the backstory.

Simon Fisher-Becker drops back into Dorium as if it’s been a few weeks rather than years since he played the role on TV, and Jacob Dudman’s Doctor makes a good foil – in fact, I wouldn’t be too surprised if Big Finish went the River Song route and started to feature the character on his own! There’s certainly plenty of potential there, and Fisher-Becker evidently enjoys his association with Doctor Who.

Director Helen Goldwyn keeps things moving at an appropriate pace – it’s a story that takes its time to get going, but never feels as if it’s stalled.

Verdict: An enjoyable continuation of the era. 8/10
