For Teagan Frost, working for China Shop Movers is an excellent career move, considering her psychokinetic powers – firstly, because her only other option is the dissection table, and secondly, because China Shop Movers is in fact a cover for a branch of national security operated by the shadowy yet illustrious Tanner, where Teagan’s “PK” can be used for a good cause. Her life may not be perfect, but LA isn’t too shabby for a prison. However, at the site of a particularly high stakes job, a body is found, killed in a manner only Teagan’s powers could enable. On the run from her own organisation, with only 24 hours to absolve herself, Teagan comes to find she cannot trust anyone – not even her own powers.

A frantic, rabid assault through Los Angeles, the classic 24 hour deadline and relentless plot twists propel the reader alongside Teagan on her perilous journey through past and present. Despite certain unique life circumstances, her character is intensely relatable, and believable, with her sharp wit, determination and occasional complete exhaustion. Ford defies the conventional martyr-complex-superhero with this new breed of enhanced individual who just wants to open a restaurant with a pun-derful name.

Raising complex issues of homelessness and that isolating other-ness that afflicts so many, particularly now in Trump’s America, this book tells a timely message against a backdrop of intrigue, Hellstorm and ton of sh*t flying through the air.

Verdict: Chaotic and enthralling, the book exerts its own psychokinetic pull over the reader. 8/10
