Chucky is still causing mayhem… or is he?

The joy of this second season of psychopathic doll shenanigans is the feeling of a creative team at the absolute top of their game, where the many and varied elements are firing on all cylinders and in perfect harmony. One second it is deliciously, tastelessly laugh out loud funny, before it turns on a pinhead to touch on something truthful and even profound.

As the title ‘Hail Mary!’ suggests, the theme of this week’s outing is forgiveness. In a glorious nod to A Clockwork Orange, our gang set about seeing whether Chucky is capable of redemption. It’s about as bonkers as anything I’ve ever seen and My Little Pony will never be the same. Of course, things don’t go to plan, but perhaps not for the reasons one might expect.

It’s beyond nuts, but it works because it’s underpinned by properly motivated characters, and ideas that are worth exploring. Once again it looks amazing. I have long contended that the best-looking show on TV is Better Call Saul but the killer doll is giving the New Mexico ambulance chaser a run for his cinematic money.

The season is also keeping fresh by adding new ingredients along the way, the best of which is Lexy’s roommate, the brilliantly wide-eyed Nadine, played with unsettling innocence by Bella Higginbotham. Nadine presents as a sort of ‘cut-and-shut’ between Little Orphan Annie with hints of Ellen Ripley welded somewhere deep in her soul. At one point, Lexy gawps at Nadine, who has swapped her teddy for a very large knife, and asks warily: ‘Who are you?’

I’m sure we will find out in due course.

Verdict: If you’re not so sure about Catholic priests being murdered for comic effect, this won’t be for you, but if you like a show that has you giggling and cringing and on the edge of your seat – all executed to small screen perfection then this is a great weekly treat. 10/10
