A transfer student’s unusual interests make her an easy target at her new all-girls boarding school before she discovers her popular classmate’s special talent.

Another episode that on the face of it looks very familiar, and yet manages to subvert and expand on the typically associated tropes. When new kid Irene (Sophia Macy) is bullied by bitchy mean girl Madison (Abbie Hern) and exhibits psychic powers, the screen starts screaming Carrie at you. There’s even their equivalent of the prom (in this case it’s a science fair) where the girls humiliate Irene and she responds with deadly force.

Written by Heather Anne Campbell, who also scribed last year’s Six Degrees of Freedom and Not All Men, what makes this episode so enjoyable is the way that it switches the power dynamic between the main characters. Yes, it’s all about being popular, trying to fit in and make friends, but you’re always wrong-footed about who actually holds the power.

And right up to the every end, the focus switches between the girls, leaving to a satisfying conclusion. The eye-roll moment is when Jordan Peele’s The Narrator wraps up and explains what is already perfectly obvious.

Verdict: More than a predicable Carrie clone, there’s a blurring of the lines between good and bad – and I challenge you to have worked out all the twists before they happen. 8/10
