Kaleidoscope Entertainment, out now

On Halloween night in New Salem, two radio DJs tell a twisted anthology of terrifying local myths that lead to a grim end for small-town residents.

This Halloween anthology movie boasts gory, practical effects that are a throwback to the 80s and 90s, but like your spoils at the end of a night trick or treating, this is a mixed bag.

Chilly Billy (Corey Taylor, Slipknot) and Paul (Zach Galligan, Gremlins) are hosting 66.6FM’s Annual Psychotronic Halloween show, where they share urban legend local stories of horror. From the mean dad who gets his just desserts from his demon-summoning daughter, to an evil clown, a winged demon and corpses rising from the dead – there’s a lot going on, but ultimately little of substance.

Arguably, there’s a bit too much going on here, with six tales included, meaning that some have short run times, being little more than vignettes.

There’s little time to build up back story or (more crucially) scares, with the greater reliance being on rubbery, gory effects. It reminded me of the better horror anthology movie Trick ‘r Treat, but this lacks that movie’s focus.

Verdict: With just as many tricks as treats, this hit and miss Halloween horror is good in parts, but it’s really all over the place. 6/10
