Eureka Entertainment, out now

A painter suffering from creative block descends into extreme vices to kickstart her mojo, but soon finds that she has spiralled out of control in a heady mix of drugs, sex and murder.

Dezzy Donahue (Dora Madison – Dexter) is behind on the rent, she’s late in delivering her commissions, her agent has dropped her and she just wants to party. But as Joe Begos’ (The Mind’s Eye) cautionary tale warns us, it’s a slippery slope when you turn to excess to fuel yourself.

Madison is great as Dezzy, she’s on screen for pretty much the entire 80 minutes, transforming from a not particularly nice person to start with into a monster after trying out new drug Bliss. From crazed three-way sex to memory blackouts she moves on to witnessing a murder before herself gorging herself on victims in seedy nightclubs and drug dens.

We’re never entirely sure how much of what we’re seeing is real or in Dezzy’s head, Begos keeping the camera in perpetual motion and disorienting us with a thudding soundtrack and acute angles. Through it all, Madison is formidable, frequently topless and covered in blood, devouring the underbelly of LA as she fuels her artistic abilities and completes her masterwork.

The limited edition release features a silver laminated slipcase and booklet with new writing on the film. The Blu-ray HD transfer is supported by multiple audio commentaries – film historians Kat Ellinger and Samm, director Joe Begos and actress Dora Madison, and Begos again, producer Josh Ethier and the FX team.

Verdict: Visceral and disturbing, a horrific chronicle of a drug-fuelled descent into hell. For the strong of stomach or those looking for something challenging. 8/10
