As the Crains struggle to make their way through their sibling’s funeral, a gruesome discovery is recalled from the past and Luke takes matters into his own hands.

It’s somewhat a gamble at this point in the series’ run to have an episode which while not inconsequential (we’ve been building up to Nell’s funeral) does struggle a little under the weight of its family drama. Indeed, at times you might be forgiven for thinking that you’re watching an episode of funeral home-set drama Six Feet Under, and only when a ghost appears or we flash back to the past that you remember that this is a horror show.

Unusually for a show that so far has been at its best in the character moments, it’s the house scenes that are piquing the interest – what’s behind the wall, what’s the secret of the red door? After Luke steals the car and wallet in his quest to return to the house, we get a significant moment between the Crain elder and oldest son, which really goes to the heart of the show – the family has a disease that has never been treated, and they are all on the edge of a breakdown, the house treating them like an unfinished meal

Theo and Shirley are still at each other’s throats following the former’s outrageous behaviour, but this is punctuated by the loud, industrial banging, reminding them of the bigger issue they’re facing. And as Luke enters the house with gallons of petrol we have the creeping dread that this will not end well.

Verdict: These two episodes could easily have been condensed into one. At this stage we’re dying to get back to the house and this is not the time to be baggy with the pacing. 6/10
