A war against humanity in the aftermath of the massacre at Westworld…

The eight episodes of Westworld’s third season make for compelling viewing, and those who were perhaps put off by the mindbending nature of some of the storytelling in the first two seasons will find that this intrigues rather than confuses. It’s consciously very different from those earlier years, as we are in the world of the creators (much of the time) and those who felt that the show had lost its way towards the end of the second season will find that Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy have given a much more coherent whole. (You can read our episode reviews here.)

The box set comes with a host of extras including brief featurettes for nearly every episode (anywhere from 3 to 9 minutes long), conversations between pairs of actors – fun but not essential – and a location report on the Spain and Singapore shoots. The meat comes in We Live in a Technocracy, a quarter of an hour in the company of Nolan and Joy as they get into some of the real world tech and concepts that underline the season – you may well find yourself watching this twice, but don’t dive in until you’ve seen the whole series.

Verdict: An excellent package – although commentaries would have been the icing on the cake – for a shorter but punchier season. 9/10
