When a large, congealed blob of fat in the Wellington sewers becomes sentient, Minogue and O’Leary go underground to confront the monster.

Directed by the show’s co-creator Jemaine Clement, Wellington Paranormal’s third season concludes with a wacky retro homage to The Blob as a fatberg emerges from the sewers and begins to consume the locals. Right from the off, we know that the cops like their fried chips, setting up the abundance of fat in the New Zealand capital’s sewers.

It’s when Minogue And O’Leary investigate the disappearance of people at a local car wash that the fatty beast starts becoming extra confident in its attacks. By the end of the half hour our hapless leads are in hazmat suits and their resolution has consequences to the sewer network. The pink blob itself is a great visual effect, pulsing and glowing as it seeps out of the fish and chips shop.

Verdict: Gloopy, gooey fun to round off another strong season. 8/10
