River travels back to an evacuated London and encounters the Yeti…

I’ve commented elsewhere recently on the terrific way in which Big Finish have been able to persuade people to reprise their roles from long ago Doctor Who stories. In that instance, it was 2005 I was referring to; here it’s 1968, with Ralph Watson returning to the role of Captain Knight. John Dorney’s script works on two levels –those who know The Web of Fear are aware of Knight’s fate; those who follow River because of her 21st century appearances and aren’t fans of the classic series will realise that there’s something in store for him, and it’s not likely to be pretty.

Dorney draws from the whole set up of The Web of Fear – thankfully resisting any temptation to find a way to involve or mention Lethbridge-Stewart – and there are some great action moments, directed clearly by Ken Bentley and aided by strong sound design and score from Howard Carter. Dorney also uses River’s own background to good effect: it’s easy to forget Melody Pond’s early years, which were only touched on briefly on screen. You can see why River has a natural empathy with the young girl that becomes embroiled in her hunt for a missing picture – but there’s also one of the best takedowns of River that I’ve heard, when Captain Knight has just about had enough of her attitude.

Verdict: An enjoyable step back 51 years. 9/10
