Titan Books

An in-depth look at the making of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, featuring rare and previously unseen production art and new and exclusive interviews.

A lot has been written about the movie in the 41 years since its release, so the big question for the die-hard Trekker is whether there’s enough new to justify the purchase of a lavish making-of book about The Wrath of Khan. Thankfully, the answer is yes.

John Tenuto and Maria Jose Tenuto have written a book that follows a standard format for these behind-the-scenes books, taking us from the project’s initiation to script development, casting, filming, release and so on. It’s illustrated with full-colour images and printed on quality paper stock and many of the images I’ve never seen before.

Where the book really takes off is in its ‘did you know’-style snippets about everything from alternative casting, deleted scenes and moments that might have been, revealing that perhaps I didn’t know quite as much as the movie as I thought I did. In the foreword by Julie Nimoy, the Spock actor’s daughter describes this book as a time capsule, which I think pretty much nails it.

Verdict: Even after 40 years, this book can unlock new secrets about my favourite Star Trek film. Stick it on your Christmas wish list. 9/10
