Eaglemoss / Hero Collector, out now

The Time Lord Victorious strand marches on with the first of four special sets from Eaglemoss/ Hero Collector, in the same scale as their ongoing Doctor Who Figurine Collection.

I’ve been collecting the Doctor Who Figurine Collection since the beginning – 180-odd regular issues, countless rare Daleks, many special editions, seven years of squeezing highly detailed collectible into bulging display cases – so buying these additional Kaled bad boys was something of a no-brainer.

As you’ve come to expect, the models are highly detailed and of considerable heft – they’re made from a dense poly-resin – and luckily they both arrived with gun arm, plunger and eyestalk all intact; over the years, our postal service has been somewhat over-zealous with their transportation of the figurines. The Dalek Drone is modern RTD-era design but in the original 1960s livery of grey with blue roundels – it looks magnificent. The Emperor Dalek, complete with bulbous head is a lovely update of the 1960s TV Century 21 design.

All issues of the regular collection come with a magazine, and the A2 publication here is a treat, though it’s an interesting design choice having the front cover image as a wrap-around, and on its side. Written by the Davros/Yarvelling of Time Lord Victorious, James Goss, in the 20-page booklet we get background on the Dalek Drones of the Restoration Empire, Dalek hierarchy among the different empires, a spotters guide to the different Emperor variants and a highly detailed (26 labels!) cross-section spread of the bronze dictator.

Finally, there’s a short four-page story by Goss, dynamically illustrated by Dave Ladkin (whose name includes all the letters of ‘Dalek’ – should we be concerned?) and Andrew Mark Thompson. The Emperor is reviewing a distant message from a Drone, inciting the sort of emotions normally excluded from Dalek-kind. What is the message, and what does it mean? Only Time Lord Victorious will tell.

Verdict: A very easy purchase for collectors of the Doctor Who Figurine Collection, appreciators of well-made Dalek merch, or those who need a mini despot or two accompany them as they read/watch upcoming Time Lord Victorious entries. 9/10
