DD 3Nelson and Murdock receive their first proper paying client… but what exactly are they being hired for?

With the introduction in person of Vincent D’Onofrio in the closing moments of this episode, most of the key players are now on the board. We spend some time with Fisk’s assistant – who Matt can now recognise by the distinctive sound of his Cartier watch – as well as with Ben Urich, the Daily Bugle, sorry, Daily Bulletin reporter (sadly the Bugle and J. Jonah still belonged to Sony at the time this was made), one of the key later additions to the Daredevil mythos. With Karen’s approach to him at the end of the episode – despite the warnings she’s received from various parties about keeping her move shut – he should come into Matt’s orbit pretty quickly.

The violence level in this episode is high, with two very nasty head injuries at either end of the hour, as well as the now-obligatory vicious hand to hand fighting between Matt and whichever thug he’s targeting this time. It’s good to see him using some other talents, notably in the multiple levels he puts across in his closing speech to the court – Charlie Cox’s American accent may not be perfect, but he’s great casting as Matt able to communicate all sides of this mixed-up character.

The moral gradations to which Matt refers in that speech are becoming the hallmark of this series – and is keeping it gripping television.

Verdict: Now we know the players, the sparks can really begin… 8/10
