Arrow Video, out now

When a South Korean family adopt a test subject from a pharmaceutical company, they think that all their money woes are over, but success comes with unfortunate side effects.

As Parasite and now this movie show us, South Korean families stick together through thick and thin, and the Park family here certainly need to pool their resources to survive a zombie apocalypse. And it’s an absolute joy – with witty subversions of the genre, a deft touch of slapstick and some stunning action set pieces.

When zombie Jjong-bi bites the head of the family, they assume that he will transform into a member of the walking dead, but instead he gets younger. This rejuvenation technique is picked up as a way for the family to finance the restoration of their petrol station, and residents of the village are soon queuing up to get bitten and to shed the years. But while our friendly zombie would rather eat cabbage and ketchup than flesh and blood, we know something is going to go wrong… and it really does!

Also known as The Odd Family: Zombie on Sale, Arrow have a real treat here, tonally similar to One Cut of the Dead. The 1080 High-Definition presentation is crystal clear, with some clever rather than literal presumably newly-translated English subtitles. There’s also an audio commentary with filmmakers and critics Sam Ashurst and Dan Martin, Q&A with director Lee Min-jae, a video essay by critic and producer Pierce Conran some short behind-the-scenes featurettes.

Verdict: A hoot from start to finish, as zom-coms go it’s this years One Cut of the Dead, which is no mean feat. 9/10
