We are invited into Chucky’s Heart of Darkness

As we approach the closing stages of this excellent second season, there are a lot of story strands to draw together in preparation for what, it’s reasonable to assume, will be a no-holds-barred finale. As a consequence, this antepenultimate episode is chockablock with plot, which doesn’t leave a lot of room for the ideas and wit to sparkle as they have done previously.

Nevertheless, there are some wonderful moments, and this is undoubtedly a special episode for the fabulous Nadine. Hats off to the super-talented Bella Higginbotham whose performance has helped to make this series particularly joyous.

Meanwhile, in the unlikely event that you have never seen Apocalypse Now, you might struggle with a good deal of the dialogue and imagery that forms the spine of this week’s Chucky outing. It would be fair to deduct a point for making it so reliant on knowledge of that film, rather than being driven by its own narrative imperatives.

Verdict: These few niggles aside, it’s still great fun, although this week is particularly gory, and perhaps best avoided while eating. 8/10
