Guy finds out the truth about Kevis and Helen and pays a visit to Jasper.

This is MUCH better. After another episode of running in place, Guy, like us, has had enough. This entire episode is basically Guy demanding answers from people, first from Helen, then from Olive, the woman from last time who we find out this episode is his handler. Played by Maisie Richardson-Sellers, she’s indicative of the left turn the show took. The annoying, enigmatic beat from last week is revisited and given context and we see Olive for who she actually is: a woman as frightened and disgusted by the events Guy witnessed as he was. Helen too gets some enormously overdue character development as we discover that she, like Guy, was a Talamasca ‘Project’. It’s revealing, honest stuff and it might all be lies, or at least not the whole truth. But it’s a start, and the show finally feels like it’s off the blocks.

That leads to Guy’s most interesting, least intelligent choice, which is going to chat to Jasper. William Fichtner plays the vampire running the London Motherhouse and he’s having enormous fun. His scenes with Guy snap with playful, dark energy but it’s the other beats we see him work here that really land. ‘Recruiting’ poor Checkers especially.

The other standout this week is Bryony Hannah as Ridge, one of the detectives working Soledad’s murder. Hannah is methodical, laconic and principled. She’s also running headlong at events, which is a nice change from Guy’s leisurely approach and she and Guy look set to collide. When the do, the show should kick up another gear.

Verdict: Eventful, fun, dark. This is what last week needed to be. Here’s hoping the momentum stays. 7/10
