Empty nesters Dolly and Dutch seek clarity on how to spend their next chapter.

Kramer vs Kramer, the Fantasy Island edition? OK, that title’s a little obvious, but I like the twist that Fantasy Island gives to the tale as old as time that is, sadly, marital conflict.

As Javi and his newly discovered daughter, Helene, begin to wrestle with a relationship they each have no frame of reference for, Teri Hatcher and James Denton, who played a couple on Desperate Housewives, make guest appearances as a couple who have simply lost the art of communication. That trusty island magic knows what they need, but when the first plan fails, things get real on a kooky quiz show… it’s quite amusing but a little cringey. There is a bit of nicely done misdirection before the obvious resolution just before curtain-close… but that’s what we watch this show for, right?

There’s a very silly drunken girls night on the beach between Ruby and Helene, and something strange and as-yet undefined in the water… that scene could have been a little less forced and clunky, but it did the trick. As Javi gets into his ‘Daddy’ stride, it seems Elena still isn’t sure of something, despite the loved-up moments we see. What’s going on in that pretty head I wonder?

Verdict: Laughs and cringes in our island paradise. 6/10
