The most hated feared organisation in the United States… asks the Church for help with the Church of Satan.

Another packed episode of Evil sees some major changes for Kirsten, both in terms of her view of herself, and the way she interacts with the world – from a denial in the first scene that she’s involved with someone else to acting on impulses that have been noticeable throughout this season. Katja Herbers gets to run the gamut of emotions and it’s probably a good thing that Kristen is more grounded given what else is going on. Rather oddly, there’s no pick up on Ben’s problems with his girlfriend from last episode – you’d have thought that this was something he might share with the team, given everything they’ve all been through.

There’s a double focus on Leland – he’s going through his exorcism (and there’s some quite horrifying moments in that, not least in Michael Emerson’s vocal gymnastics), and having to cope with the aftereffects, requiring Christine Lahti’s Sheryl to bathe him in… something distinctly unhygienic! Sheryl asked if Leland was pimping her out – and the answer becomes quite clear. The double focus extends to Sheryl too, with her version of a mother/daughter chat that gives Kristen rather too much knowledge of her mother’s activities.

And there’s just 18 days till David becomes a priest – of the Catholic Church rather than the sub-Dennis Wheatley (deliberately so) Church of Satan that the team investigate on behalf of the IRS. Leland’s disgust at their promotional material is a lovely touch.

There’s just two more episodes of this season left, and so far for all of our lead characters to go…

Verdict: Another strong episode that’s ratcheting up the tension. 9/10
