Silva Screen, out February 1

Another muscular compilation of epic movie and game themes from Silva Screen – turn it up to 11 for maximum effect.

This digital album of strident themes could just as easily be called ‘Music to do cool things to’, bursting with big sounds and with the calorific content of a bodybuilder’s lunchbox. There’s no subtlety here, and that’s the brief that  London Music Works and City of Prague Philharmonic have been working to.

In addition to Zimmer’s Wonder Woman’s theme from Batman Vs Superman, there’s the Justice League Theme by Danny Elfman and a punchy track from Tron: Legacy. If you don’t already own it, the ten-minute version of Ramin Djawadi’s Light of the Seven (from Game Of Thrones) is the highlight, the composer’s finest work on the series to date.

Less familiar to me were Steve Jablonsky’s The Island and Transformers: Dark of the Moon, both fulfilling the criteria of driving the action forwards. Gamers will recognise Harry Gregson-Williams’ theme from Metal Gear Solid 2 and Anthony Gonzalez / Joseph Trapanese’s M83 from Oblivion. There’s even three exclusive, specially commissioned tracks from up and coming composers Evan  Jolly and Rick Clark – ‘Breaking Through’, ‘Striding Forward’ and ‘This Earth’.

Verdict: I don’t want to wade into the murky waters of ‘Why buy cover versions when you can get the originals?’ Suffice to say that this tidy collection of big music does exactly what it sets out to achieve… LOUDLY! 7/10
