Wolfe plans to sell his latest crop of metahuman inmates to Amunet Black, including Barry. With time running out, Barry MacGuyvers together a prison break while the team try to help from the outside.

There’s a moment at the top of this episode where Ralph discovers he can shapeshift. He does this by briefly transforming into the man he’s describing, a fellow PI played by Stargate and all around genre alumnus Paul McGillion. It’s a neat trick and sets up the next stage of Ralph’s arc.

It also includes a tone deaf fat guy gag that almost throws you out of the episode as that time Bill said ‘I’d fatted her’ on Doctor Who.

It’s such a weird bum note because it’s the only one. The rest of the episode proceeds very nicely as Ralph tries to impersonate Wolfe to delay the buy to Amunet, Barry leads a group of his rogues gallery out of prison and Amunet cements her place as one of the best elements of the show. Seriously, who knew ‘Goth Mary Poppins’ would be a trick Katee Sackhoff had up her sleeve?! She’s massively fun and funny, like watching a metahuman version of Queenie from Blackadder II.

Likewise, Ralph continues to impress. Hartley Sawyer remains one of the best elements of the show and his combination of cheerful squalidity and fundamental decency is really endearing. Aside from the fat jokes of course.

The episode also impresses with the A plot. Rundine and Deacon aren’t given much to do (which in the case of Ramsey ‘There’s a percentage in my super-villain name’ Deacon is a plus), but Sugar Lyn Beard’s return as Hazard is great. She’s sweet and sincere and you expect her to live.

She doesn’t.

And while the next episode pulls a very similar trick, here it feels earned and gives Beard a chance to flex her villainous muscles. It’s a high stakes ending and it’s a successful one. Ralph conquering his shape-changing powers to impersonate DeVoe and exonerate Barry? Not so much.

Verdict: Everything is coming together this season in a way that’s making The Flash one of the strongest parts of the Arrowverse. Here’s hoping they stop feeling the need to take random cheap shots to power them along. 6/10
