Still reeling from the loss of Martin Stein, the Legends discover the next anachronism.

Martin Stein.

Somehow the younger version of their friend, and the Beebo doll he was buying for Christmas, have ended up in Viking era America. And now Christmas Day? Is Beebo Day…

Only Legends of Tomorrow could successfully write out a character in an episode dealing with the death of another character and make it the funniest hour of the season so far. From Stein’s physics fu in the opening scene to the Vikings chanting ‘BEEBO! BEEBO! BEEBO!’ to the closing surprise cameo this is an absolute pleasure to watch.

That’s largely because it’s a show that, like its characters, has developed its own style. The Legends aren’t even the best of what’s left, but they get the job done and their skewed plans are a joy. I especially loved their infiltration of the Viking hoard (‘WE BROUGHT BOOZE!’) and Ray using Beebo to maybe bed global warming as a concept in a few centuries early…

But the episode really soars with its characters. A hint of romance between Sara and Agent Sharpe is nicely handled but it’s Leo Snart and Jax who steal the show. Wentworth Miller’s arch, snide, really nice guy is huge fun here especially when he gets Mick to realize he has a drinking problem. We know he won’t be around long but he’s a pleasure to see on the show and I hope Miller’s recent comments suggest his absence won’t be a long one.

But Franz Drameh and Caity Lotz land the episode. Lotz’s driven, angry Sara is ripped up by her losses and loves her crew of vast assholes far more than she says. Almost lost in the mix at one point is her referring to Jax as ‘little brother’ and that’s just what he is. A little brother who, working to shake off tragedy, has to find his own way. Drameh’s honesty and calm makes his scenes hit home with full force and Graham McComb is excellent as the younger Stein too. The love between the two men is clear from the start and Stein’s final speech, explaining how he’s happy to die after a full life, is a highlight of the show so far.

Verdict: Throw in a John Constantine cameo setting up next episode and this is a pleasure from start to finish. A great mid season finale? It’s an Odin’s Day miracle! 10/10
