Trinity Wells was once the face of television news – but her life has changed dramatically. Can her new driver help her?

Changes of regime on Doctor Who mean a lot of familiar faces suddenly disappear from our screens. When Russell T Davies moved on from the series, Steven Moffat brought in his own regular characters, and while we might have expected not to see more of Jackie Tyler or Sylvia Noble, it also meant we no longer got updates from Trinity Wells, one of the very few characters to appear in all three of the Who-related series. But as James Goss’ final story for this box set shows, there was far more to Trinity – and the actress who plays her, Lachelle Carl – than we had seen in her brief appearances.

As well as providing some different material for John Barrowman to get his teeth into, Driving Miss Wells takes an oblique look at aspects of the Doctor Who universe. How would it feel if you’ve been the one telling everyone that there’s aliens on the way – or here – and then being told that it’s all a mass hallucination (or Derren Brown, according to The Day of the Doctor)? Goss examines how everything you take for granted can be pulled out from under you, and how easy it can be to blame outside forces – in Trinity’s case, a massive alien conspiracy…

Verdict: A different outlook on the Doctor Who universe makes for a captivating tale. 8/10
