Under pressure to retaliate against China, General Naird wrestles with his conscience, Dr Mallory makes an ominous threat, and Erin goes rogue.

Picking up from episode 9’s cliffhanger, Space Force’s Season 1 finale does at least feel like a decent wrap-up for the inaugural set of episodes, boasting some decent special effects and a plot that propels things along at a fair old crack.

There’s not too much time to dwell on the quirks of Steve Carell’s Naird, this action-packed half hour making the simpler plotted episodes from earlier in the run look even more lightweight. The question here is to how the US can retaliate against China’s act of aggression. We discover that the astronauts have guns on board the craft, much to Mallory’s disgust, and when Naird refuses to take deadly action he is relieved of his position.

Once again, some great looking lunar buggy action helps showcase the production values, and the attacks on the respective bases lead to a conclusion that doesn’t serve anyone. Naird rescues his daughter, but is likely to be court-martialled on his return, his wife has broken out of jail (sort of) and the opposing parties on the Moon might have just shot themselves in the foot.

Verdict: A pacy season finale, it’s a shame that the show didn’t have the budget and scale to be like this every week. It’s been a patchy opening run, and now we’ll have to sit back and wait to see if the show returns with a stronger second batch of episodes. 8/10
