Arrow Films, out now

In 1996, a deadly virus is unleashed by a group calling themselves the Army of the Twelve Monkeys, destroying much of the world’s population and forcing survivors underground.

Arrow Films’ new UHD restoration of Terry Gilliam’s 1995 sci-fi classic has never looked sharper in this director-approved 4K scan that reveals greater depths than previously visible.

The Dolby Vision (HDR10 compatible) picture has a vibrancy to what is generally a muted colour palette, with a punchy DTS-HD 5.1 audio track (the 2.0 stereo soundtrack is also  an option). Whether or not you buy this release will invariably depend on whether you already have Arrow’s features-packed Blu-ray, which was a significant improvement on the Universal release. And even if you already have the most recent Blu-ray, this first pressing of the 4K has the benefit of an illustrated collector’s booklet featuring writing on the film by Nathan Rabin and Ian Christie.

Verdict: This 90s sci-fi classic improves with age and technology – another prime example of UHD adding greater depth to the viewing experience. 10/10
