Titan Comics, out now

It’s 2029 and Blade Runner Ash continues to hunt the streets of the rain-soaked world of Los Angeles for renegade Replicants, but this time she’s trying to protect as many as she can.

Following the EMP of 2022 which destroyed Tyrell Corporation’s records, making it easier for Replicants to re-settle back on Earth, Ash has rejoined the LAPD Blade Runner squad, her superiors unaware of her divided loyalties. After the success of the 12-issue Blade Runner 2019 run, it’s business as usual with the same writers and artist returning, joined by two new creative consultants. But make no mistake, this is a high quality brand and that quality has been maintained.

The return of the old gang (in front of and behind the panels) is of course great news, as the team perfectly encapsulate the look and feel of Ridley Scott’s 1982 movie, with each chapter taking us closer to Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049, in this case the link to the future movie is the construction of the giant Seawall.

We flash back to 2017 where Ash has been tipped off by a tailor about a ‘skinjob’, but the operation is botched, leading to the informant’s death and the escape by the Replicant. A mistake that will haunt Ash in 2029. Mike Johnson’s script gives just enough away to pull us into the new story, while Andres Guinaldo’s spectacular artwork spoils us with splash pages of a garage full of Police Spinners, and the Seawall construction site.

Verdict: Immediately we’re authentically back in the dystopian world of Blade Runner, and I couldn’t be happier. 9/10
