Can the Wirrn be confined to Windermere, or will they spread across the whole planet?

The second part of Chris Chapman’s opening tale lives up to the high standard set by its predecessor, and confirms that this really would make an excellent jumping on point for those who’ve not yet heard any of the Big Finish UNIT tales. Certain character points relating to the regulars that hadn’t been mentioned earlier arise here organically out of the story so by the end you’ve got quite a good idea as to who all the key players are – and more importantly, how they operate as a team and individually.

Chapman has thrown a new player into the mix with Vineeta Rishi’s baptism of fire as Shani – and as with all new UNIT arrivals (hello Liz Shaw and Jo Grant, for example), she quickly becomes key to the solution (even if to an extent she’s also part of the problem, as shown in the first part). Her situation also creates some interesting moral problems for Ingrid Oliver’s Petronella Osgood, not to mention Jemma Redgrave’s Kate Stewart, and it’s how they all deal with the issues that sets this series apart.

Verdict: If someone ever decided to do UNIT: The Movie, they’ve got the perfect template here – a terrific piece of work from all involved. 10/10
