Spoilers

Uhura seems to be the only one who can hear a strange sound. When the noise triggers terrifying hallucinations, she enlists an unlikely assistant to help her track down the source.

While this is primarily Uhura’s (an excellent Celia Rose Gooding) hour, a lot of this episode is used to take stock of where everyone’s at halfway through the season. Spock and Chapel discuss whether or not they have a relationship that needs to be disclosed, La’an wants to develop the bond with James Kirk that happened in an alternate timeline, and Una is sparring with Pelia.

The resolution to the story is classic Star Trek, and as always, it’s a joy watching the crew working together. My only quibble is that this is the second time this year that James T. Kirk has been drafted in to help the plot. He’s a welcome presence, but there’s a risk that his use becomes contrived, and could take away some of Pike’s agency.

Verdict: Solid Star Trek, giving the ensemble cast a chance to shine. 7/10
