Titan Books

The official companion book to the most recent trilogy of Halloween films featuring behind-the-scenes photography and interviews with cast and crew.

It’s inevitable that your views towards a ‘making of’ book will in some ways be influenced by your opinion of the film or films being covered. I personally enjoyed Halloween (2018) but was very disappointed by Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends.

Abbie Bernstein’s book, which includes a Foreword by director David Gordon Green, looks at all three films in order, and as (I assume?) the coverage was gathered during the time of filming, there’s no need to tackle the issue of how well the films were received. As such, there’s no real context outside of the actual making of the movies themselves.

To set the scene, there’s very little written about John Carpenter’s 1978 original or its many sequels (ignored by this series), we just go straight into how Carpenter and Jamie Lee Curtis were lured on board. There are many gory photographs of the prosthetics used to convey Michael Myers’ attacks (they would be equally at home in Fangoria) and countless behind-the-scenes photos of cast and crew at work.

Verdict: As nuts-and-bolts coverage goes for just the making of a film trilogy, it’s fine, but expect nothing more. 6/10
