101 Films, out now

A trip through a post-apocalyptic world, where the friendship between a boy and his dog is the only currency that matters.

It’s hard to see why L Q Jones’ post-apocalyptic black comedy won the 1976 Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, but then maybe it felt fresh at the time, and certainly it’s one of the earlier entries in this genre. A young Don Johnson plays Vic in the year 2024, accompanied by telepathic dog, Blood, scavenging for food in a post-atomic wasteland and looking for women to rape. Yes, you did read that right, and this misogyny is the area where the film has dated most poorly, as well as a poorly judged final line about cannibalism.

This newly restored HD transfer by 101 Films marks the movie’s Blu-ray premiere and features a conversation between Harlan Ellison (on whose 1969 novella of the same name this movie is based) and screenwriter/director Jones. There’s also a commentary by Jones, John Arthur Morrill and Charles Champlin.

Verdict: Definitely a product of its time, this puerile, minor sci-if movie may find its audience with collectors of cult oddities. 4/10
