Burnham and Adira visit the Trill homeworld while Saru’s efforts on the Discovery to help the crew reconnect yield surprises.

Sometimes Star Trek is about spectacular space battles and futuristic technology, and sometimes it’s about feelings. Forget Me Not is most certainly in the latter camp, an hour of big feels, deep emotions and facing some uncomfortable truths.

It’s really hitting the crew that they have left all their former lives behind. It was a significant sacrifice; until now they’ve been running on adrenaline, and now they’re facing the enormity of it all. Saru wants the best for everyone, offering some much needed R and R, while inviting his senior crew for a meal, but what starts out as fun haiku banter descends into recriminations and arguments. We know that Keyla hasn’t been right for some time, but did she just need to let off some steam?

The other major plot line follows Burnham and Idira on the Trill homewold, hoping to help release Idira’s trapped memories. A warm welcome soon sours as the Trill leaders realise that their symbiont is inside a human. After a brief kerfuffle, Idira is permitted to submerge within the pools in the Caves of Mak’ala where the memories are unlocked and a tragic back story is revealed. Considering that Idira only joined last week, it’s admirable that they already have so much back story – there are others who have been in the crew since the beginning and we know little more than their name.

Verdict: A temperature check on the Discovery crew and a recognition that all is not OK. Emotionally fragile, but accepting that it’s OK not to be OK, you really want to reach out and give these brave travellers a big hug. Oh, and the coordinates to Starfleet Command beckon. 8/10
