The three amigas.

We have a seemingly Hallmark-friendly group of gal pals celebrating a joint birthday this episode, but unsurprisingly the reasons behind their fantasies are more important than their skin-deep desires. No, it’s not all what you’d think.

As someone who is part of an all-female lifelong triumvirate of friends, this rings true. These are women who share a bond and a love that transcends distance and time, yet there are also things that needle each of them. This belies a lack of understanding of the different choices they’ve all made as their lives have taken three very different paths. This is easy to fix, with better communication. Guess what happens, folks? Yes, but it’s so sweet.

Despite the seemingly twee storylines about the importance of friendship, and the less than perfect acting in places, there is a comforting message that no person is an island on Fantasy Island, no matter how much they bicker or try to push people away in the noble cause of their work (I’m looking at you, Elena). This is comforting TV, and the way that the three friends ultimately show their abiding love for one another is touching. Just don’t eat any cake while you watch, you’ll get a saccharine overdose.

Verdict: Friendship that’s worth its weight in unrefined sugar. 6/10
