A church handyman discovers a magic model that gives him the power to help his small town, but the mayor takes all the credit for his good intentions.

An absolute joy of an episode that presents a fantastical high concept premise worthy of the original show. Handyman Jason Grant (Damon Wayans Jr, Big Hero 6) discovers a scale model of the little town that he lives in (Littleton, obviously) and that whatever he does to it happens in the real environment. He pours water on it and there’s rain. He applies paint to the model and the diner is redecorated.

It’s a crazy, non-sensical idea, and yet this town needs an injection of magic because it’s down on its knees following the loss of its benevolent former mayor and is suffering from the disinterest of its new official. Jason literally has the whole world in his hand, dropping a meteorite on the evil mayor’s car and unwittingly causing damage to the town during a scuffle. The ending makes no more sense than the rest of it, but it’s a lovely twist within this fantasy scenario and offers a ray of hope.

Verdict: The closest the show has got this season to Rod Serling, this could easily be a modern retelling of a classic, lacking modern cynicism and finding a moral heart in a small town. What’s not to love? 9/10
