After reuniting with what remains of Starfleet and the Federation, the Discovery and its crew must prove that a 930 year old crew and starship are exactly what this new future needs.

Another episode and another disappointment for the Discovery crew. Having not been welcomed with open arms when reaching Earth, hopes were high that the joint Starfleet and Federation would be pleased to see them. Unfortunately, all the giddy excitement from seeing the new ships and tech at HQ falls flat when Admiral Vance (Oded Fehr – The Mummy) announces that they are to disbanded.

The urgent mission that Michael and the Discovery have to undertake is fairly nuts and bolts Star Trek stuff, the greater interest derived from lots of character beats: Keyla is still not right, Philippa is not herself, Lt Nilsson is getting some screen time (is she being set up for something?) and Nhan gets to go on an away mission.

The visual effects are fantastic, the designers clearly having fun with the newly-designed Starfleet vessels – including the Voyager J! – and what inspired casting to have David Cronenberg as an interrogator. Oh, and the snippy interviews with the crew are great fun.

Verdict: Another world-builder that helps establish the new now, adds a couple of mysteries and makes the crew just a little bit more interesting. It’s Starfleet, but not as we know it. 8/10
