Can the treacherous Morgana seal Camelot’s fate?

One of the best episodes the show has ever produced wraps up the first two-parter of this season, with well-choreographed fight scenes involving stuntmen in close combat as well as computer generated hordes of warriors, alongside character development, and even some humour. For the first time in the series, we see Arthur as a future King, taking difficult decisions and leading his people into battle. It means a thankless role for Tony Head: Uther is either mad, asleep or being quickly injured, and you have to wonder how much longer he’ll be involved with the series.

There’s an acknowledgement of the strong friendship between Arthur and Gwen, although no indication given whether either has acted on their feelings during the year between seasons. There’s even a serious moment between Arthur and Merlin, for which both Bradley James and Colin Morgan respectively up their game.

The scene is set for a battle of wits between Katie McGrath’s Morgana and Merlin this season, and if the production values can maintain the standard of this episode, then a magical contest should ensue. If you’ve not caught the show before, watch part 1 on iPlayer, and jump on board this week.  9/10
