If only all Secret Santa gifts were this well thought through.

Fantasy Island takes us into the world of cheesy Hallmark Christmas films in a 2-part festive special that sets things up for the second series, now it’s been renewed.

Come, on, confess. You’ve had a tough day and wanted to watch a film with your brain switched off and your streaming service of choice has suggested one of those badly acted, predictably scripted, unrealistically perfect Christmas films full of people who are far too well put together for the real world. Like many things that have little nutritional value, they’re addictive, and one guest genuinely wants to live in one – but it’s ok, she’s self-aware enough to know how ridiculous it all is, and there’s an amusing pastiche of the genre that I enjoyed.

Fantasy Island has occasionally walked a similar path of syrup-drenched sentimentality, but it’s usually done with better skill, more depth of feeling, genuine heart, the occasional twist and sprinkles of humour, action and spice. There’s the occasional plot that may resonate and provide a new perspective for the viewer. I want Ruby to be my Secret Santa next year please, she puts more care into it than that colleague from accounting you talk to about twice a year.

The Christmas special is no exception, and at long last we get to unpack more layers of Elena’s past as she herself is challenged unexpectedly. The drama gives us insight into a conflict that enables her to demonstrate her true strength of character, so important for the entire premise to work. We also get more of the magic that drives the Island and these are both elements I’d like much more of in series 2.

There’s also a nice nod to the original series in the 70s that will please any long-term fans.

Verdict: Comforting wintertime TV that will warm your heart – even if your hot chocolate has gone cold. 8/10
