Great Sco… Gavin!

There’s an homage to the 1980s classic Back to the Future here (unashamedly echoed in this review), as Josh and Izzy start to fade from the metaphorical polaroid picture. Here be spoilers.

So very many questions in the air, difficult to follow when all the ‘rules’ of time travel in La Brea haven’t been fully established at the start of the episode, but there are some heavy plot points dropped this week and overall, it’s cohesive, so I have to award marks for that.

The glaringly obvious elephant in the room is the striking difference in hair and eye colour between Gavin and Isaiah. I know these things can change as we age, but if that difference was to throw us off the narrative scent… it worked on one level, but now works against the credibility of this vital plot point.

We do finally get some answers to Gavin’s ‘visions’, now revealed as ‘memories’ and it makes sense that the visions he has had coincide with the opening of the sink holes / sky cracks, depending on your point of view. But who is the girl he came with as a child? All the answers come thick and fast in the final 10 minutes.

Don’t even get me started on the cow… although it does provide a redemptive opportunity that’s signalled like a foghorn. It’s cute though. The stage is now set for a high-drama series finale, and I’m looking forward to it more than I thought I would be.

Verdict: Sky cracks? Where we’re going, we don’t need… sky cracks. 8/10
