The Doctor discovers the true story of the Blitzats Jazz Quartet

If this is the last new 12th Doctor story that we’re going to get – and it certainly seems as if a lot of the new fiction announced for the Spring is looking back over past incarnations of the Time Lord in a “Five Faces of Doctor Who” type way before Jodie Whittaker starts as the 13th Doctor in the autumn – then it’s a great way to finish. Dan Starkey’s performance as Capaldi’s Doctor does more than touch some of the notes that characterised his time in the role; it’s one of the best versions we’ve had to date.

Darren Jones’ story apparently started life as an 11th Doctor tale, but it feels very at home with this more crochety and Scottish Time Lord, travelling on his own and becoming entangled in events. David Darlington’s sound design is an integral part of the mix, given the musical basis for the tale, and for once description of musical effects are matched by the sounds given.

It’s an enjoyable romp as the tables are continually turned on the Doctor and those who he’s investigating, and there’s more than a hint of an old 9th/10th Doctor adversary about the eventual villain.

Verdict: A strong outing for the 12th Doctor. 9/10
