Criminals of New York, cower in your beds! Inspector Missy Masters of England, London, England is here…

This has to rank as one of the weirdest audios that Big Finish has ever released (and there’s quite a bit of competition for that title). Even trying to describe it in a couple of sentences is difficult – but basically Missy is still on the hunt for something, and masquerades as a detective inspector in order to infiltrate the police investigation. Or is she out to infiltrate the true crime series hosted by Dick Zodiac? Or is it something infinitely more complicated?

The answer is all of the above, and writer Nev Fountain has a great time playing with the tropes of the true-crime reconstruction series (right up to the sign-off, with exactly the right alteration to it!), before the story shifts when the culprit seems to be discovered. It’s a story that gives you a very different perspective on the Doctor Who universe and certain beings within it that you’ll carry across to other stories currently being told and wonder just exactly what is going on.

Verdict: There are red herrings aplenty, clever trickery with the audience’s perception of events, some great sound design from Joe Kraemer and true pathos – it may be totally insane, but it works brilliantly. 9/10
