Quirk, out now

Marty McFly’s first adventure – as you’ve never experienced it before…

Ian Doescher has carved a niche as William Shakespeare’s genre heir, rewriting the screenplays of the eight main Star Wars films into iambic pentameter, and it’s not too surprising that he’s turned his pen to some other properties, starting with Back to the Future. (There’s also a Mean Girls version but that’s a little outside SFB’s remit!). As with the adventures in a galaxy far, far away, it’s clear that Doescher is a fan of the series, picking up on the sort of minutiae that only fans will, and adding little touches that will bring a smile to your face.

What sets this one apart though is its treatment of Einstein, Doc’s faithful pooch who’s sent through time initially. His dialogue consists, perhaps not too surprisingly, of the word “Woof”. However, as the best editors do for such foreign languages, Doescher provides a translation. In full Shakespearean mode. And some of them are rather long (my favourite begins “The wrap and woof of time I have travers’d / And come out on the other side intact”).

Verdict: An enjoyable fresh take on a classic movie. 8/10
