With The Mandalorian and Grogu imminent, Alasdair Stuart continues his recap of the adventures to date…
It’s now clear that the child is a Jedi and must be returned to his people. Following a rumour that a Mandalorian on Tatooine may have a lead, Din runs into Marshal Cobb Vanth. A likable gunfighter who bought Boba Fett’s armour from Jawas, Vanth sincerely wants to protect his town, Mos Pelgo. Din helps him and the two negotiate a truce with the local Tusken Raiders to kill the Krayt dragon menacing the region. Din leaves with a new ally and Boba Fett’s armour and is watched by Fett from nearby.
After a transport mission ends with a crash, a battle against ice spiders and Din’s first meeting with veteran X-Wing pilot/Republic Marshal Carson Teva, Din meets three Mandalorians led by Bo-Katan Kryze. Bo-Katan recruits him to help steal weapons from an Imperial transport and after the mission is successful, Bo-Katan gives Din directions to someone who can help; the jedi Ahsoka Tano.
Stopping off on Nevarro en route to Corvus where Ahsoka Tano is, Din and the baby assist Cara Dune and Greef Karga in their newly respectable roles as local magistrate and marshal. A single Imperial base remains on-world, one Doctor Pershing used as part of his research on the baby. They successfully destroy the base, freeing Nevarro and Din leaves, unaware an Imperial spy has placed a tracker on his ship.
On Corvus, Din and the baby work with Ahsoka Tano to free the city from its local magistrate, Morgan Elsbeth. Tano is looking for Grand Admiral Thrawn, Elsbeth’s master. While she bonds with Din and his charge, she refuses to train the baby due to the bond between him and his adoptive dad. Nonetheless, she directs them to a temple on Tython where Grogu can contact other Jedi. She also gifts Din a Beskar spear.
Tython turns out to be a trap. The baby, whose name is confirmed as Grogu, meditates and is surrounded by a protective force field. Boba Fett, now working with Fennec Shand arrives and Din returns his armour just as Gideon arrives and destroys Din’s ship, the Razor Crest. The three mercenaries defend the meditating proto-Jedi but it’s not enough. Grogu is captured and Fett and Shand transport Din back to Nevarro.
The key to rescuing Grogu is Mayfield, a former Imperial soldier who Din worked with in season 1. Dune gets Mayfield transferred to her custody and he agrees to help them find Moff Gideon’s cruiser. Din is forced to remove his helmet in company, breaking the Mandalorian oath and Mayfield is confronted with his war criminal former CO, who he kills in a fit of rage. Nonetheless, they get the information they need and Dune releases Mayfield.
Din and Dune capture Doctor Pershing and call in Bo-Katan and her forces to help. They hijack an Imperial shuttle, work with Fett who pretends to attack them and cash on Gideon’s cruiser.
They clash with the robotic Dark Troopers Gideon uses and Din duels with Gideon, whose sword is revealed to be the Darksaber, a holy Mandalorian weapon. Just as the remaining Dark Troopers return, Luke Skywalker, contacted by Grogu back on Tython, appears and destroys them. Realising he’s holding his adoptive son back from his destiny, Din gives him permission to go with Luke to train as a Jedi. Alone, Din makes his way to his next job. Back on Tattooine, Boba Fett kills Bib Fortuna and takes the throne at Jabba’s Palace, aided by Fennec Shand…
