Lucifer returns to Earth and helps the LAPD with the murder of the showrunner… of a show about the devil helping the LAPD with solving murders.

This is very much an episode divided tonally down the middle – the first half predominantly deals with the murder of the showrunner of a series that takes the piss out of Lucifer itself, while the second deals with the ramifications of Lucifer’s return, and Michael’s impersonation of him in the previous episode. I assumed that Michael would be back soon – but not as quickly as he was, nor that the fight between the two of them would come so soon.

Unusually, the parallels between the case and what’s going on in Lucifer and Chloe’s lives are drawn with less subtlety than we’ve come to expect, although it is dealing with weightier matters than sometimes is the case, and there’s already some less than subtle paralleling going on with the TV show. The return of Michael and his revelations to Lucifer are obviously going to underpin this season – is everybody in the series just a pawn in some cosmic game?

Verdict: Some laugh aloud moments in the first half are balanced with weightier drama in the second. 8/10
