Lakeshore Records, out now on digital download, on CD May 25

Jeff Russo’s score to the dazzling second half of Star Trek: Discovery’s opening season gets its own disc, but beware that spoilers inevitably follow.

Still here? Good. We can’t discuss this release without addressing the Enterprise in the room, that great shiny 1701 that warped onto the screen in the season’s dying moments, followed by a newly recorded version of Alexander Courage’s original TOS theme. A lot of people will be buying this release on the basis that this new version is included – and it doesn’t disappoint. One can only imagine Russo and the orchestra glowing as they knocked this out of the park, with added sparkle and an extra flourish at the end. There’s also a lovely flourish of the Courage fanfare at the end of Incoming Transmission.

But there’s far more to this disc than the Courage cover, as evidenced by Russo’s sterling work in the first half of the season. With a sequence of episodes set in the Mirror Universe, a lot of the score is supplemented with militaristic snare drums and beats, though there’s still big action content in Safe to Drop Out Of Warp and a majestic sweep In Coming Home.

Verdict: A stunning second serving of Discovery’s action-packed cues with an added burst of Alexander Courage. An essential 54 minutes for Star Trek soundtrack fans. 9/10
