Warner Home Video, out now

A President with an anti-alien agenda is only one of the problems that Kara/Supergirl faces in her fourth year of adventures…

With the fifth season just starting in the US, and heading our way quite soon, time to catch up with the home entertainment release of the last season. You can check out Alasdair’s reviews of the individual episodes elsewhere on the site (starting here), but my overall take looking back is that it’s a slightly uneven season, with the politics and social commentary not always balanced quite right. That’s not to say that those don’t have their place – Supergirl has always handled these things as part and parcel of the show’s DNA – but the arrival of Lex Luthor definitely kicks the season into a fresh gear.

There’s plenty of extra material on the Blu-ray release, although still no commentaries, with gag reels and deleted scenes. We get some of the overview material from San Diego, as well as the crossover episodes – particularly handy for those who may not keep totally up to date with every single facet of the ever-expanding Arrow-verse!

The episodes look and sound terrific: the picture quality seems better than the TV HD presentation, and there are a couple of times where I wonder if improved effects have been slipped in for this ‘permanent’ version.

Verdict: A slightly uneven year that’s presented in the best way for fans to make their own assessment. 8/10
