Disorder coverAvon and Vila are sent on an assignment by Blake but Vila thinks he’s got a better offer…

Eddie Robson’s Disorder suffers a little from its placement in this box set, and perhaps won’t get the attention that it deserves. It’s a solid Blake’s 7 “caper” story, with some good first person narration for Michael Keating as Vila, and the requisite interjections from Paul Darrow as Avon, but after the soul-searching and dilemmas faced in the previous story, it doesn’t work as well as it should. There’s also a key plot point based around something that we actually “saw” happening in the previous story, which doesn’t help.

A lot of the “surprises” towards the end aren’t really the shocks that they should be either, simply because we’ve got used to the relationship between Vila and Avon, and by staying true to the characters as established, we can guess what’s going to be happening. In the days when Big Finish were showing that they knew how to handle these characters, this story would have probably been received better.

Sometimes the Chronicles sets have been thematically linked, and when this started, I assumed that it was picking up some of the strands left hanging at the end of the previous story. It doesn’t: it’s a standalone tale, which gives us another hour of adventure with the characters but doesn’t add much to our knowledge of them.

Verdict: A solid, well-acted Blake’s 7 tale. 6/10
