BBC Radio 4 for BBC Sounds

So much we still don’t ken as series 1 comes to an exciting close.

“So I thought, ok, that is definitely something I cannot explain.”

The shocks keep coming in this series finale, even before we get on to the case we all know and love, Room 6-11.

The biggest, for me, concerns episodes 10 & 11, the Luibeilt case. I’ll keep this spoiler-free, but it’ll send a shiver down your spine as it did to Danny! Seems too much of a coincidence to me, but… it also makes Phil one deeply unlucky guy… Make of that what you will.

Back to Alanbrooke Hall and we hear from key witnesses again: Ken, and Gary and Billy from the first review in episode 5, but we also now have James, the missing piece of the puzzle from our previous visits to Queen’s University Belfast. Again there’s a balanced and even-handed exposition of the evidence, as both team believer and team sceptic score points from the new testimonies. A new student village now stands on the same site, so it’s likely someone does still live on (or over) that same ground. Field tip to Northern Ireland, anyone?

All our favourites are back, not just for the episode but also for the Listen Live and Twitter Spaces event immediately afterwards. Once again, being able to put our questions to the creative team and witnesses feels like a privilege and adds depth and insight to the accounts we hear in the episode. Despite the different viewpoints being posited, the debate is respectful and sincere – as are all the witnesses who have shared their stories with us during this series.

My take on case 15: There may be logical and prosaic explanations of some of the phenomena, and certainly tensions that could have impacted the psyche of the witnesses, but not for all. Not for drawers and books opening at random, things flying across the room, and people seemingly vanishing after disturbances. I don’t find it difficult to wrap my head around the fact that there are just things we humans don’t – and may never – ken. Bloody hell.

Verdict: The case that keeps giving sends Uncanny series one off with a bang. With so much paranormal phenomena still left to explore, the Uncanny Community will be back for more. 10/10
