The horror anthology series delivers a Halloween issue, with host The Creep completing a Jack-o-Lantern lantern with real human eyes and teeth.

I know it’s hard to align episode release dates when making a show, but surely when you’re transmitting a show through a October you save the Halloween episode for as close to the 31st as possible? It would appear not, but regardless, the All Hallows’ Eve segment that opens this week’s instalment is a moving piece of TV

Written by Bruce Jones (he wrote short story Jenifer on which Dario Argento based his Masters of Horror episode) and directed by Creepshow/Tales from the Darkside alumnus John Harrison, we follow a bunch of costumed teens on Halloween night, terrorising members of a community. They seem to be acting with impunity, and then we find out why. Poignant and terrifying at the same time, there’s influences of Ray Bradbury and Richard Matheson here.

The Man in the Suitcase is a more conventional, and fun, segment. Justin, who has just broken up with his girlfriend Carla, accidentally brings home the wrong case from the luggage carousel. It contains a man, impossibly contorted within. He’s a djinn, and when in pain releases gold coins. Yes, this is one of those morality tales that frequented the pages of 50s horror comics, and when the protagonists do the wrong thing, bad consequences are inevitable. We’re clearly on the side of the genie and enjoy watching the sadistic bullies getting their comeuppance.

Verdict: Two very different stories make for an eclectic hour, but both are well-paced and engaging and perfectly capture the comic book tone. 8/10
